HOW TO LOWER YOUR ENERGY COSTS

Did you know that the average American home can lose up to 50 percent of its energy through inadequate insulation and inefficient lights and appliances? Try these simple steps to lower your energy bills.

  • Inspect and tune-up your residential heating system regularly. A heating system that runs well is more efficient and will save you money.
  • Consider switching to a propane water heater. Over time, propane water heaters can save up to one third as compared to electricity, and they heat more than twice as much water in an hour as a comparable electric model.
  • Turn down your water heater from the standard 120 degrees to 115 degrees to save more than 10 percent on your water heating bill.
  • Change your furnace filter monthly to increase efficiency. Use receipt of your monthly propane bill as a reminder.
  • Wrap your water heater in an insulating blanket to improve efficiency.
  • Vacuum the dust off the refrigerator coils (found in the back or underneath the unit) every three months so it takes less energy to cool. Check the gaskets around the door and make sure it shuts tight.
  • Install flow-restricting showerheads to reduce hot water usage by up to 50 percent without affecting shower pressure.
  • Run washing machines, clothes dryers, and dishwashers with a full load.
  • Invest in a programmable furnace thermostat timer that lowers your home’s temperature when you are not there. You can cut annual heating bills by as much as 10 percent per year by turning your thermostat back 10-15 percent for eight hours per day.
  • Protect against drafts by caulking and weather-stripping around windows, doors, and other openings.
  • Close vents and doors in unused rooms. Make sure your attic and basement are properly insulated.
